CAMILLE J. GAGE

Camille J. Gage began her creative journey writing music, playing bars and clubs and touring with a variety of bands including the all-female, alt-rock band, Tetes Noires. She later segued into topically inspired painting, public art and mixed media performance.

Ms. Gage holds a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design and is an alumna of the Women’s Art Institute at MCAD. Ms. Gage was a 2004 Institute for Community Cultural Development fellow and has received grants and awards from Intermedia Arts, the Southern Theatre, the Family Housing Fund, FORECAST Public Art, and the Jerome Foundation.

Ms. Gage is passionate about the role of the arts in community.  Her work has explored the duality of life, the genetic and emotional bonds that connect families through generations, the cultural upheaval following the events of 9-11, and, most recently, the war in Iraq. She is fond of quoting President John F. Kennedy, who once remarked, “If more politicians knew poetry and more poets knew politics, I am convinced the world would be a little better place in which to live.”

“As an artist and engaged citizen I continue to be inspired by the intersection of art and political expression and believe that artists who choose this path have a role to play in illuminating the public consciousness.”
