LEAH GOLBERSTEIN |
I aspired to be a mathematician, got sidetracked by Talmud study, and ended up as a mother and a fiber sculptor. I consider myself to be one lucky woman. My interests in languages, nature, and Jewish history influence my art and my travels. In my sculpture and installations, I use hand-made paper and natural fibers to depict the emotional and spiritual fibers within. I was born and raised in Minneapolis. Having entered into national and international juried competitions, I have won awards by curators from the Guggenheim and Smithsonian museums. I was a teacher for almost 30 years, and from 1995-2005, I was on the faculty at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. I hold degrees in Mathematics, (BA, University of Minnesota, MA, Brandeis University), and an MFA in Visual Studies (Minneapolis College of Art and Design). I am a contributing writer for the Bay Area Jewish Healing Center’s, Torah Reflections, and am editor of the book, Aribert Munzner: Teacher, Colleague, Artist. I am happiest when I’m creating, learning, spending time with my children, or am surrounded by trees. Behind closed doors, I sing and dance in the kitchen.
