Artist's Statement

My spiritual practice is to walk in places where nature is allowed to assert itself. Knowing the land holds stories, I pay attention. I am interested in the resonant relationship between observed experience and the expressive language of drawing and in the nuanced and essential ways through which meaning is conveyed.    – Joyce Lyon

In these new large-scale works, Joyce Lyon evokes the autumnal world she experienced at a boreal Minnesota pond. She translates the vibrancy and complexity of reflected images using the sensual medium of oil stick and the gestural engagement of drawing. These works become expressions that hover between recognition and mystery. The artist plays on the double meaning of reflection, attentive to the sometimes ambiguous images projected onto the water (is this real or mirrored, is this what I see?) while engaging in meditations on the natural cycles of life and the intertwined journeys of the human and natural world.
