Form + Content Gallery presents Photographer Ellie Kingsbury and Butoh performer Gadu’s collaboration of subconscious creativity, and a harmonious invitation in a divided time. Gadu will perform at the artists’ reception, with photos from a previous performance hanging on the walls.

Ellie Kingsbury, is an awarded Twin Cities photographer, and Gadu, a dancer, choreographer and master teacher of spring forest qigong.

Description
Photographer Ellie Kingsbury and performer Gadu, present the quietude and harmony found in the subbody. Subbody is a connecting of subconsciousness and body, and during a Butoh performance that emanates from this state, notions of conventional beauty are dispelled. Ellie took 1500 photographs of Gadu during such a performance, and printed examples of the subtleties found in Gadu’s inner resonance. The movements are not characterizations of animate or inanimate objects, but a projection of what is within. When the world around us is protracted with friction and dissonance, the exhibition allows for a quieting, transformational space.

Biographies
Gadu (Katsushi F Schmitz) has been a dancer/choreographer in the Twin Cities for over 20 years. Throughout his career he has studied various movement disciplines. Since 2005 he has been practicing Butoh, a contemporary performance art form from post WWII Japan. He has been a Butoh performer and instructor in the Twin Cities since 2008. He has received McKnight Fellowships, Minnesota State Arts Board Grants, Metropolitan Regional Arts Council Grants and Sage Awards.

Gadu is also a Spring Forest Qigong Master and Master Teacher. He lives with his husband in Northeast Minneapolis, where he practices Qigong healing and Butoh at Heart of Tao Resonance Art (www.doushinresonance.com).

Gadu has been organizing charity healing events for children in Fukushima since 2014, supporting continuing effort to provide a relief to those who were affected by the devastating earthquake and nuclear reactor collapse in Fukushima in 2011.

Ellie Kingsbury has used photography as her principle art form for the past 30 years, and has recently incorporated mixed media into her projects. As a life-long Midwesterner, her ideas have always been rooted in the beauty and life force found in the ordinary. Ellie received a McKnight Fellowship for her project “Automatic Beyond Belief”, a story of Industrial Design Age kitchen appliances. She is also a twice recipient of the Artist Initiative grant through the Minnesota State Arts Board. She has shown both nationally and internationally, including group shows in Beijing, Helsinki, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Portland OR. She has been included in many group shows in Minneapolis area galleries, including the Katherine Nash Gallery, the Catherine G. Murphy Gallery, the Phipps, and the Bloomington Arts Center. She has had solo shows at the Vine Arts Center in 2016 and Form + Content Gallery in 2018.
